JAMES BUSBY: RAISING THE BAR

Native Englishman James Busby could be called the Thomas Jefferson of New Zealand. He left England in 1824 for Australia, where he planted Old World vines and wrote several treatises for commercial viticulture and winemaking.

Busby moved to New Zealand in 1832 and expended much of the same pioneering effort in planting Old World vines and publishing winegrowing techniques as he had in Australia. He made his first wine in 1834, and a good share of that vintage was made into sweet quaffs preferred by British soldiers and other British ex-pats in New Zealand at the time. A year later, he was called on to turn his authorship talents toward writing the Declaration of Independence for New Zealand, which succeeded in turning back a threat of annexation from France.
