CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
The thing about growing up the way Tulsi had, she knew what to expect in charged situations. Even with the progress sheâd made with Ba and her mom, it was still easier to revert to their way of doing things. Devi was already twisting her hands; tears filled her eyes. Ba was ready to turn away, disappear from where sheâd come. Tulsi decided to break the cycle. Even though Lucas and Ash were here, Tulsi wanted answers and didnât want to wait. She would channel Lucasâs directness.
âBa? Why are you asking Ash to leave?â Tulsi took her grandmotherâs hand. âHeâs an old friend.â
Aruna didnât answer. So Tulsi asked her again.
Aruna glared at Tulsi. âNo good will come of this. Thatâs all Iâll say.â Then she slipped out of Tulsiâs grasp and left.
Tears rolled down Deviâs cheeks. Ash had his arm around her mom. The sense, the gut sheâd pretended she never had, told her to run. That she shouldnât be here for whatever was about to happen. Tulsi steeled herself. âWhat did she mean? I donât understand.â
Devi closed her eyes, wiped her face with the edge of her sari. Then she stepped out of Ashâs arm and went to Tulsi. âThere are things you donât know.â Her voice quivered.
So many things. Tulsi gripped the counter to keep from balling her fists. âStart somewhere. Anywhere.â
âI canât,â Devi said. âBecause you will hate me.â
Tulsi moved out from behind the counter and clutched her momâs hands. âNever. Itâs not possible. Even if you killed someone, I would know it was because you were doing what you felt was best.â Her stomach roiled. âNot that I would ever believe you capable of something like that. You donât cause harm. If there is one thing I know about you, itâs that. You would never deliberately hurt anyone.â She was stalling because whatever came next would be painful. She knew that. Wasnât sure she wanted to hear it.
It was Ash who moved to stand beside Devi. âJust like your mom and I were friends, so were our mothers. They had a falling-out. We were torn apart because of it.â
Chicago. âIs her name Hema?â
Ash nodded.
âHow do you know?â Devi asked. âWhat do you know?â
The panic in her momâs eyes scared her. âI found a letter a while back. From Ba to a Hema Patel. It didnât say much, except that Ba felt betrayed and something about stealing dreams.â
âThey were close,â Ash said. âAll four of us were.â
âThey wouldnât have approved,â Devi said. âThere was so much anger between them.â
âThatâs why you were taken away,â Ash said to Devi. âAruna auntie knew I would try to stop you. I knew you didnât want to leave me.â
It was as if her brain was being poked by the scalding blade of a knife. âYou were more than friends.â
Tulsi saw the shock on her momâs face. The knife twisted, and Tulsi squeezed her hands into fists to stay focused. It was difficult to breathe. In the distance a warm palm rested between her shoulders.
