Sophie gazed at each woman in turn. “Now it’s my turn to demand confidentiality. No one can know about this.”

“No one except the rest of our team. It’s more important than ever that we keep Lise safe.”

Mercy added, “And that we find her before the transfer of power in three days. Felix has no business taking over the throne.”

“This must be the ‘additional things’ Irmgard wanted Lise to do before the coronation ceremony. Which means finding the paintings matters more than ever,” Sophie said.

“Let me call Willa, who heads the team, and we’ll get the ball rolling. We don’t have much time,” Camille said.

Sophie’s mind spun. Had Lise read Irmgard’s letter? Did she know the truth yet?

So many unanswered questions, but again and again, Sophie came back to the same thing: find the paintings. Somehow, someway, they were the key to getting her friend back alive.

Irmgard had a reason for the letter she wrote and the things she wanted Lise to do. Sophie believed absolutely that Irmgard was trying to protect her daughter. Since she couldn’t anymore, Sophie would pick up the torch and finish it for her. She’d make it right.

When Camille hung up, Sophie said, “We need to get the second painting back from Mac, then find the third one.”

“You don’t happen to know where he’s staying, do you?” Camille asked.

When Sophie shook her head, Camille picked up her phone again. “Hey, Picasso, sorry to bother you, but I need you to check some security cameras for me.” She described Mac’s Mercedes and gave the time he left the cathedral and which direction he was heading. “We need to know where he went from there. We’re assuming a hotel, but we’re not sure.”

Twenty minutes later, they had the information they needed and were headed there.
