* I was able to track down the pilot’s surviving relatives, who told me they had always been haunted by the understanding that Smith had been the cause of the crash. I was sad to hear that, and I assured them that the chief investigator, who knew Lieutenant Smith and his excellent flying record, had found it hard to believe that pilot error was the cause.
† The Soviets have been accused of Sikorski’s death because Sikorski questioned their explanations that the Germans were responsible for the massacre of 12,000 Polish officers at Russia’s Katyn Forest in 1943. (The Soviets finally admitted responsibility in 1990.) The British have been implicated on the basis that Churchill was angry at Sikorski for straining British-Soviet relations in 1943. A memorial plaque to Sikorski at Gibraltar notes that “the cause of this mysterious accident has never been ascertained; a fact which has given rise to many speculations, doubts and rumours.”
‡ Official logs of McNown, the military attaché, indicate that he made several visits to both Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. On January 30, 1947 (following the Saudi trip), he traveled to Ethiopia, presumably to get accredited as a military attaché; on February 6, he left again for Ethiopia. On February 17, he was off to Tripoli (Libya) and Turkey, after having been in “Naples, Rome, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jidda, Addis Ababa, Kartoum, Asmara, Eritrea.” On February 28, he was off again to Jidda. His final trip was on March 19, 1947.
§ In January 2016, the Foreign Policy Journal published an online article with links to some of Hillary Clinton’s emails with her advisor, Sid Blumenthal. They were a shocking refutation of all the claims that the NATO intervention was for humanitarian reasons, revealing “admissions of rebel war crimes, special ops trainers inside Libya from nearly the start of protests, Al Qaeda embedded in the U.S. backed opposition, Western nations jockeying for access to Libyan oil, the nefarious origins of the absurd Viagra mass rape claim, and concern over Gaddafi’s gold and silver reserves threatening European currency.” See Brad Hoff, “Hillary Emails Reveal True Motive for Libya Intervention,” Foreign Policy Journal, January 6, 2016, https://www.foreignpolicyjournal.com/2016/01/06/new-hillary-emails-reveal-true-motive-for-libya-intervention/.
Emails linked to in the article include a March 27, 2011, email from Blumenthal to Clinton “re: Rumor, Q’s rape policy” and an April 2, 2011, email from Sidney to Hillary re: “France’s client & Qaddafi’s gold.”
¶ As it turned out, it was not Lebanon, wearied from fifteen years of civil war, that would erupt once again in sectarian violence as part of the Arab Spring, but its neighbor, Syria. Lebanon, instead, in an eerie throwback to 1948, when it had accepted 100,000 Palestinian refugees driven from their home in what would become Israel, would once again become host to refugees. By 2018, 1.5 million Syrian refugees fleeing from the civil war in Syria would arrive in Lebanon.
** As described by David Hirst, author of Beware of Small States (New York: Nation Books, 2010), UN Security Council Resolution 1559, sponsored by France and the United States
