CHAPTER EIGHT
âAny luck with the presentation so far?â Jessi asked as they worked behind the building, letting the shelter dogs get out into the large playpens for some exercise. âOr maybe I should be asking if thereâs anything I can do.â
Courtney shrugged as she watched a white lab mix named Clove streak toward one side of the fenced-in yard, put the brakes on just in time to miss the chain link, and then turn around and race off in the other direction. âIâm not sure thereâs much I can do.â
âYou always say that,â Jessi pointed out. âWhen youâve got something troubling youâwhether itâs something with the shelter, your personal life, or some wild mystery youâve managed to get yourself embroiled inâyou always think you wonât be able to handle it. But you do. Every time. And you know weâre always here to help.â
âI know.â Courtney smiled warmly at her coworker. Sheâd worked alongside people at Miller and Martinez Marketing who were perfectly nice when they spoke to you but who would easily stab you in the back just to get your desk when you werenât looking. Fortunately, her luck had been far better here. âWhen it comes to the contest, Iâm just frustrated that Iâm limited on time. I think we could make this a really great presentation if we just had an extra week or two.â
âAnd the other stuff?â Jessi asked. She picked up a tennis ball and threw it for Billie, a border collie mix who was all about playing fetch.
âMom and Dad have a few houses they liked, so they have some options to consider. I havenât heard much of anything from Detective Fletcher about the case, and I canât say that I have a lot of great leads myself. Itâs driving me crazy, but in the meantime, Iâm trying to focus on what I can.â
Jessi looked over her shoulder as a van pulled into the parking lot and stopped at the edge of the building where it wouldnât be in the way of any customers. She read the big sign on the side that said, âCooperâs Constructionâ and turned back to Courtney. âDoes that involve having some repairs done? Because I have a whole list of things for you, boss.â
Courtney managed a laugh as she called Clove over and clipped a leash onto her collar. The building constantly needed repairs, which really wasnât funny at all, but sheâd been dealing with it long enough that it was more like a running joke than anything else. âHopefully, weâll get around to them. Actually, I wanted Mark to give me a bid on adding a new wing.â
âWow, you really are serious about winning this money, arenât you?â Jessi gaped at her for a moment before she convinced Billie it was time to go inside. âThatâs big stuff!â
âYes, but itâs what this place has needed ever since I first started here. Getting this bid is actually part of my strategy. Can you put Clove up for me so I can go talk to him?â
âSure thing!â Jessi grabbed Cloveâs lead in her free hand.
