WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEK

Double Check

Headaches: Severe headaches can be a sign of issues with your blood pressure that should be assessed by your practitioner. Sometimes headaches are merely the result of pregnancy hormones, or they may be tied to other symptoms that together are called pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH), or even preeclampsia, which is a severe illness in pregnancy related to blood pressure, protein in your urine, and other complications.

Swelling: The key here is sudden swelling in the face or hands as opposed to the normal swelling pregnant women experience. Sudden swelling is linked to PIH or even preeclampsia, whereas normal swelling develops slowly and should go away after a period of rest.

Blurred vision: Another sign of PIH or preeclampsia, report blurry vision immediately to your practitioner.

Bleeding or spotting: Bleeding or spotting, either red or brown in color, can happen after sexual intercourse, a vaginal exam, or vaginal ultrasound. If bleeding or spotting occurs at other times, report it to your practitioner immediately.

Back or abdominal pain: This type of pain can be a sign of contractions or premature dilation of the cervix, a sign of potential preterm labor.

More than six contractions per hour: This can be a sign of preterm labor. It can be normal to have contractions, just not at this frequency.

Gush of fluid from the vagina: This can be a sign that your water has broken prematurely. Your practitioner can determine if the fluid leaking from your vagina is amniotic fluid or normal vaginal discharge.

Report any strange or troublesome symptoms to your practitioner immediately.

BODY BASICS

Your baby is now large enough that his or her movements can be felt by others. This is such an exciting time for families as they get to share in these movements with mom. That said, all too often, the moment you tell someone that the baby is moving, the baby seems to sense this and stop. This can lead to some giggles.

As the weeks pass, you may begin to experience more symptoms related to the end of pregnancy, such as backache, leg cramps, heartburn, and hip pain. The more you keep active and exercise, and the healthier your diet, the less you will be plagued by end-of-pregnancy symptoms and miseries.

BABY DATA

Your baby continues to grow and gain weight. The eyelids are able to open and close again. Your baby’s skin is still very thin and wrinkled from living in the amniotic fluid, making it possible to see the veins underneath. As your baby grows and deposits more fat under the skin, the veins will become less visible and your baby’s body will fill out.
