Jules had been right about Matt. He’d guessed ‘Justin Bieber’ in the fourth round of questions, winning ten points for him and Jules. The rounds continued and Lucy surprised herself by claiming seven points for her and Will with ‘Megan Markle’. They were now down to Sean, who turned out to be terrible at guessing and was so far from ‘Elon Musk’ it wasn’t funny, and poor Archer!

‘Am I famous for playing a sport?’ he asked.

‘No!’ called out (most of) the others before Matt interjected with, ‘Hang about, this is one of the grey areas I was talking about. It’s kind of “yes”.’ He must have been referring to Archer’s baseball film where he played a major league pitcher.

‘It’s not a yes,’ drawled Audrey. ‘That’s not what he’s famous for!’

‘Okay, fine,’ conceded Matt.

Archer had watched this exchange intently and right as Sean began her question with, ‘Am I―’ Archer bellowed, ‘Oh! Wait a minute!’ All eyes landed on him, including Sean’s. ‘Am I me? I’m me, aren’t I?’ He caught Lucy’s eye and she nodded at him with a wide but close-lipped smile. He peeled the sticker from his forehead to confirm, then threw his head back and laughed loudly. ‘Oh, that’s brilliant. Well done, Audrey.’

Audrey groaned as though she’d been defeated but the others applauded Archer’s two points, peals of laughter filling the room and Chloe patting Archer on the leg. ‘Good job, babe. You got us two points!’

Will looked over at Lucy to share the joke, and she lifted her hand to her heaving chest as she tried to breathe through the laughter. What a fun evening this had turned out to be―and they’d just added thirteen points to their tally. On impulse, she turned and pressed her lips to Will’s, draping an arm around his neck to pull him closer. It wasn’t often that Lucy initiated a ‘public snog’, especially around their friends. Perhaps frolicking at the waterfall today had been some sort of turning point for her.

‘Get a room, you two,’ teased Chloe. Lucy gave Chloe a sly side-eye as she slowly pulled away from Will, then lifted her chin in Chloe’s direction in mock indignation. A moment later, she dissolved into giggles, feeling her cheeks flame with embarrassment. Right, so less of a turning point and more of a slight bend in the road.

‘Hey, where’d you go?’ Will said low in her ear as he scooched his chair closer to hers.

Lucy smothered her embarrassed laughter and locked eyes with him again, the rest of the room and everybody in it falling away. When Will looked at her like that, Lucy was practically (and willingly) helpless. She gulped, then caught herself wetting her lower lip with her tongue. ‘Want to forfeit? Maybe head upstairs?’ he asked quietly.

Will’s final two words were drowned out by Audrey’s cry of, ‘Okay, score check before the last game!’ but Lucy had heard him and was very much tempted. That is, until Audrey announced that Will and Lucy were in a tie for equal first with Jules and Matt.
