One of the first horses Diana bought on her own judgement came out of a chance meeting with the famous hunting priest, Father McMahon. He persuaded her to drive to Co. Clare (with her cousin, Maureen Owen, for company and protection), so he could show her a nice horse a farmer had for sale.

The two girls turned up at the priest’s house, and had to wait a while because the priest had been exceedingly late back from hunting the day before.

‘Now, this farmer,’ he said looking at Diana, ‘I know him well; he’s a grand young fella. Ye can get the farmer as well as the horse if you like; he’s looking for a wife.’

They piled into the car, and drove a long way. ‘How far?’ asked Diana. They were on the main road to Cork. His reply was, ‘Sure, the further ye go, the mainer it gets.’

She bought the horse, not the man, and called it Darby O’Gill. Diana described it later as ‘As mad as a hatter.’ So, they were not always successful buys.
