Kim Chronister is a health psychologist and wellness and relationship expert. She is the author of FitMentality: The Ultimate Guide to Stop Binge Eating—Achieve the Mindset for the Fit Body You Want and The Psychology behind Fitness Motivation: A Revolutionary New Program to Lose Weight and Stay Fit for Life. I asked Kim to share three key suggestions for mastering fitness motivation.
VISUALIZE. Become visually inspired by following fitness models and trainers on social media and posting photos of your ideal body in your home. On a daily basis, visualize attaining the energy, health, and body of your dreams.
FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS. It is essential that you remain positive to maintain fitness motivation. Reframe all negative thoughts (“I don’t have the time”) into more positive thoughts (“I will make the time, because workouts make me more effective in life and give me the energy and body I desire”). Reframing is a technique used in therapy, and evidence shows that it is highly effective in helping people function better in all areas of life, including sticking to a fitness program.
UTILIZE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. Frequent rewards are a necessary component of fitness programs. Reward yourself often and make sure these rewards do not sabotage your results by reducing your motivation. Some examples of effective rewards are shopping for new clothes, going to a spa, getting a massage, or going to a concert. If you find your motivation beginning to falter, plan a celebration months in the future. This will motivate you to work now.
COMEBACK LESSON: Kim has a positive outlook on fitness motivation. She sees rewarding yourself as part of the fitness program. Take the time to get a massage or go to a concert. Learn to enjoy the training, which becomes the best reward. Reframe any negative thoughts that come in and instead visualize the target state: a new you that is healthy, looking good, and filled with energy!
