chapter eight
âAre we at the kidâs table?â I asked, fidgeting like⦠Well, like an antsy kid.
Mason snorted. Tourists and families strolled past the restaurant window.
My mother, Mason, and I sat on our own in a small, brick alcove. I leaned back in my wooden chair and peered into the other room. Melanie, Nico, and his family laughed uproariously around a white-clothed table laden with food.
âNonsense,â my mother speared two gnocchi. âThe main table wasnât big enough. It makes sense to keep all the Americans together.â
I folded my arms. âSo,â I said. âChildrenâs table.â
âHonestly, Madelyn,â my mother said. âI donât know why youâre in such a mood.â
Mood? Carefully, I set down my fork. âI was kidnapped. A man died at our hotel this afternoon, ostensibly by accident, butââ
âOstensibly?â my mother arched a brow.
âSomething strange is going on,â I said, frustrated. âAnd everybodyâs acting like itâs no big thing.â And okay, maybe the jetlag I couldnât kick was making me crankier than usual. But still⦠kidnapped!
âNo,â my mother said. âA manâs death is a big thing. It matters. But weâre carrying on for Melanieâs sake. Her wedding is in a few days. Itâs one of the biggest days of her life.â
I grimaced. âBut donât you thinkâ?â
âNo,â she said firmly. âI think weâre strangers in a foreign country. We donât know whatâs going on, and odds are we never will, because weâre strangers in a foreign country.â
âWho is strange?â Nico said gaily. He strode up behind Masonâs chair and clapped him on the shoulder of his borrowed tuxedo jacket.
Melanie strolled up beside him and slipped an arm around his waist. âSorry to put you at the childrenâs table.â The ruby on her crimson gown winked.
I shot my mother a look. Ha.
âThanks for being such good sports about it,â my sister continued. âBut we couldnât separate Nicoâs family.â
âItâs fine,â my mother said.
âThe foodâs incredible,â Mason said. âItâs nothing like the Italian restaurants in the States.â
âThe chef is a personal friend of mine.â Nico smoothed his dark hair and surreptitiously checked his reflection in the window. âI will ask him to come to your table.â
âOh,â my mother said, âwe wouldnât want to disturb him.â
âNonsense,â Nico said. âIt is no disturbance.â
I exhaled loudly. Forget the chef. âHave the police learned anything about the man who died?â I asked, and my mother frowned.
âIf they have,â Nico said, âthey have not informed me. And I have no reason to expect they would.â
âBut you did know the man,â I said. Nico must feel some curiosity about his death.
Melanie laughed. âOh, Mad. Youâre the last person Iâd have thought would be so sensitive about an accidental death. Yes, itâs tragic, but you run a paranormal museum.â
âIn fairness,â Mason said, âitâs not really that kind of museum.â
I smiled at him, my insides warming. Mason understood me. My museum was charming and historical and only a little campy. And why not? Campy was fun.
âI donât know what other kind of museum it could be,â Melanie said. âItâs paranormal.â
âMadelyn is just a little out of sorts,â my mother said.
