What’s a couple’s shower?

These days, when it comes to weddings, almost anything goes. Couples are giving wedding traditions they feel are outdated a twenty-first-century update. Enter the couple’s shower: Instead of a girls-only afternoon focused solely on the bride, a couple’s shower is a joint celebration of both partners where all of their nearest and dearest—regardless of gender—are invited. If the bride-to-be in your life prefers a couple’s shower, here’s how to throw one.

1. BEND THE RULES. The best part about throwing a couple’s shower is that since it’s a newer concept, there really are no rules. Talk to the couple about the kind of party they’d like to have—brunch, dinner, cocktail party, you name it. Guests can bring gifts, but whether or not they are opened at the shower is up to the couple. Like a bridal shower, it should be held three weeks to three months before the wedding. Anyone can host the party—a family member, members of the wedding party, a close family friend. And it can be held anywhere they’d like, whether it’s in the couple’s backyard, their favorite restaurant, or a parent’s home.

2. CREATE THE GUEST LIST. Everyone invited to a couple’s shower should also be invited to the wedding. Ask the couple to provide you with the guest list; they should try to keep this party intimate and invite just their VIPs—wedding party members, both sets of parents, siblings, and close friends. Ideally, the shower should be smaller than an engagement party, with thirty guests or fewer.

3. CHOOSE A THEME. While it isn’t necessary to have one, a shower theme will help guests figure out what type of gift to buy and bring to the celebration. If you decide to have a party theme, choose one that’s based on something the couple enjoys doing together, such as traveling, camping, or cooking. Another idea: a “Stock the Bar” theme, where guests are encouraged to bring booze, barware, and cocktail recipe books to help the couple stock their at-home bar. If the couple is planning to make some renovations to their home, a “home improvement” theme might be fitting; guests can gift them with power tools, home decor, or items they may have registered for at a home-improvement store.

4. CONSIDER THE DETAILS. Put as much care and thought into a couple’s shower as you would into a traditional bridal shower. If possible, have one member from each side of the wedding party take the lead in planning and hosting the party together, with assists from the rest of the attendants. Send invitations by snail mail or email six to eight weeks before the party date (make sure the wording on the invitation makes it clear to guests that it’s a joint shower), order flower arrangements, create a menu that reflects both of their tastes, and decorate the space with string lights or candlelit lanterns to add a cozy ambiance.

5. PLAY GAMES. Showers typically involve some sort of game, so incorporate a game or two that pits the couple against each other and draws a lot of laughs.
