Saturday, October 25, 1986. 5:17PM

Robbie and I were sitting on the curb in front of his house. I took off my sunglasses and put them in my jacket pocket. The orange and pink layers in the sky were slowly giving way to the dark blue and purple layers as the sun set further and further below the horizon. I pulled out my little transistor radio and turned it on. The static crackled as I extended the antenna. I adjusted the dial until Jack Buck’s baritone voice came through loud and clear.

“What’s the score?” Robbie asked me.

“It’s 2-0 Sox. Top of the second. Marty Barrett just singled in a run,” I said.

“Unbelievable,” he said shaking his head, “They might actually win this thing.”

I nodded. “Clemens hasn’t given up a hit yet, but it’s early.”

Robbie stood up. “Speaking of early, where is that guy? He’s late!” He folded his hands on top of his head.

“Will you relax?” I said. “Josh said he’d be here. Just chill a sec.”

“So how’s his car anyway?” Robbie asked. “He wanted me to meet you guys at your house this morning but its Saturday and I ain’t getting up that early for anything.”

“It’s… pretty cool,” I said. “It looks like crap on the outside, but his system bumps. We’ll probably hear it as he drives up.”

Robbie nodded and looked behind me. “I think that’s him.”

I turned around and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Instead of the rumbling multi-colored monstrosity that I expected to see, Josh rolled up to us in a sleek, blood red car with an engine that was purring like a kitten instead of roaring like a lion.

“What’s up boys?” Josh said with his arm dangling out the window. He pulled up beside us and revved the engine. The lion’s roar was still there. “Ready to go?”

“Holy crap!” Robbie said. “This is your car?”

“Yup,” Josh said. “Just made some minor repairs and got it painted a few hours ago.”

I couldn’t believe it. It didn’t even seem like the same car from this morning. It went from looking like it had just come off the scrap heap to looking like it belonged on the showroom floor. It had shiny chrome rims with a thin black outline for tires. The disaster of a paint job was transformed into a gleaming red shell all around the body. The hood was so clean I could see the reflection of the amber skies above us.

“What’d you do?” I asked. “You ditch the car from this morning and steal this one?”

“It’s amazing what a new paint job and catalytic converter will do.” Josh said as he popped open the car doors.

“Shotgun,” I said turning toward Robbie.

We piled into Josh’s car and he revved the engine. The car was even more pristine on the inside. There wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere. The floor mats had nice straight lines across them, like the carpets at home after Mom vacuums. Every inch of the granite-black interior shone like onyx. The passenger seat was so slick, I nearly slipped off of it as I sat down.
