Shandwick is described as growing progressively more desperate, at one time drafting a letter of objection for Timberlands addressed to the schools’ principals – because pupils had joined a protest outside Parliament against Timberlands’ operations.8 Yet, despite all these efforts, the protests continued and support grew for the protection of the forests. Timberlands was especially stung by bad publicity after one of its logging helicopters destroyed an activist’s treetop platform, using a suspended log as a battering ram. It happened just as a protester was preparing to climb the tree; she was terrified.9

The end of the affair was messy for Shandwick, with an investigation into its practices by the Public Relations Institute, an overseeing body of the profession.10 Meanwhile, the incoming administration in New Zealand vetoed Timberlands’ scheme, and all native timber milling on the West Coast was halted. Timberlands ceased trading in 2008.
