Chapter Twelve

Iris

I’d overheard the phone call between Erik and whoever he was talking to in the bedroom. It upset me, he’d promised to take a look at my business plan, and when he did he cut it and me down. It wasn’t good enough and yet he wanted to make a profit off it, and steal my ideas.

There was no way I was having that. I felt disappointed but one thing became abundantly clear, I needed to get away. As far as I was concerned I was done. I’d fulfilled my contract and done my part.

While packing up my things I’d called the only person I could think of, Pamela. She was entirely sympathetic to my pleight and came to my rescue, meeting me at the corner of the road where the house was located.

“Get in Iris.” Pamela was smiling. I couldn’t help but wonder how she and Erik ever got along. He was a handful and not in a good way. Everything about him set me off, the words that rolled out of his lips, the way he spoke to me, and what his opinions were regarding me and everything about me.

As I parked my backside on the cool, smooth leather I sunk into its comfort and closed my eyes.

“So what’s up?” Pamela drove.

“Nothing, we just had an argument. Thanks for picking me up. I don’t know where I would have gone otherwise. I appreciate you letting me stay at your place for a few nights. I don’t think I can go back to that apartment.”

Homeless again, I was grateful for her kindness and generosity.

She smiled. “No worries Iris. You know, I bet you think I don’t understand but I know first hand how difficult Erik can be sometimes. He lets his mouth get away with him very easily. LIsten I’m headed to Italy.”

She stopped talking, and looked at me smiling. I knew she was up to something, thinking and I didnt want to know what her plans were.

“You should come with me to Italy. Erik’s mother was expecting you anyway, and it will give you both a chance to patch things up. Besides, we can find you some gorgeous Italian guy which will make Erik jealous to be sure.”

Stunned, I held my tongue. This woman knew nothing about me, and while I value her friendship I didn't know what her relationship with Erik or his family was currently. I felt mad, madder than a boxer in the ring but I just couldn’t bring myself to ruin whatever Erik was trying to do.

“I can’t do that, besides, why would I want another man when I have one already?”

“Aw honey, you really are in love with Erik aren’t you. That is so sweet, and I sympathize because he also holds a very special place in my heart, I still love him too. It’s a good thing we're friends, because we understand each other, at least when it comes to love. Come with me, I insist. We can get that plane ticket exchanged for another and we’ll show up together.
