Jessica Hughes overexposed this image to create an overly white, “high key” treatment. This look complements the subject by exaggerating impressions of purity and innocence.

Bright Backgrounds and Exposure

If your intention is to get a standard child photo with an evenly lit subject, keep an eye out for bright backgrounds. An extremely bright sky in the background of your composition, for example, can easily trick the camera into underexposing the scene. If you do get the exposure right, rendering the subject with realistic tones and pleasant colors, the background will be overly bright or washed out. When trying to capture details in your subject, a bright background will take the viewer’s attention away from your subject.
