“BASEBALL IS THE ONLY FIELD OF ENDEAVOR WHERE A MAN CAN SUCCEED THREE TIMES OUT OF TEN AND BE CONSIDERED A GOOD PERFORMER.”

TED WILLIAMS

WHY DID HANK GREENBERG ESPECIALLY RELISH HIS FINAL HOME RUN OF THE 1945 REGULAR SEASON?

A wise man once said that America never matured until December 7, 1941—the day that our nation was turned upside down by Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

Major League Baseball, too, had to adjust to the impact of what President Franklin Roosevelt called the “Day of Infamy.” World War II sent able-bodied men from the comfort of home to battlefields in Germany and Japan. Of those who enlisted in the US Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Corps, and Coast Guard, 428 were big-league baseball players who volunteered to serve overseas.

Because so many of the most talented players were no longer on major-league rosters, a lot of the nation feared that baseball would have to cancel its season. President Roosevelt himself put that fear to rest when he wrote a letter to Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, saying that the games should proceed for the “best of the country.”
