It is a fact of life that everybody farts be they male or female and so it stands to reasons that the dropping of the guts is also carried out by the rich and famous.

Indeed, it is fair to say that there are certain household names who are only too happy to drop a nugget or two when the mood takes them. George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman, Charlize Theron and Helena Bonham Carter are amongst many rumoured to be competent in the flatulent arts. I would also bet good money that Prince Philip like a good bum blast although obviously, I have no evidence whatsoever to support that.

Yet the sad reality is that when it comes to the creation of back end blasts, there are very few individuals who have ever made a significant splash with the general public and it’s fair to say that only two have ever made a serious living as professional flatulists. It is therefore only right and proper that in a book about farting, we should celebrate the achievements of these fine men. The first of whom was a Frenchman called Joseph Pujol.

Born in 1857, legend has it that one day whilst swimming young Joseph took a deep breath and was alarmed to experience the sensation of ice cold water entering his rear end. Having rapidly exited the water only to have it come pouring out again, he was rushed to the doctor only to be told that it was thankfully nothing to be alarmed about.

As the days passed the youth became curious about his new found anal ability and quickly discovered that not only was he able to suck in water whenever he felt like it but that he could fire it out with some force. Often reaching seven metres or more!

Further experimentation let to the discovery that he was also able to suck in large amounts of air and with some physical contortioning, let it out at will. This inevitably led onto the reproduction of simple tunes which as you can imagine, made him incredibly popular at school

However, it was during his Army service that he really began to hone his art and his fellow soldiers eventually gave him the nickname ‘Le Pétomane’ which roughly translates into ‘fartiste.’

Having left the Army and settled in Marseille, in 1887 ‘Le Pétomane’ eventually decided that he might be able to entertain audiences with his fartistry and took to the stage. Initial attempts were met with some scepticism but the novelty of his act soon won audiences over and five years later, he moved to Paris to audition for the legendary Moulin Rouge. He succeeded.

His act must have been amazing. Dressed in a fine red coat and black satin breeches with a pair of white gloves held in his hands he must have looked extremely sophisticated. He would initially take to the stage to explain to the audience what he was going to do and assure them that since he underwent daily colonic irrigation his farts would be totally odourless.
