CHAPTER EIGHT

John had called me before anyone else. I was barricaded inside my wretched Minneapolis prison, straining to hear Pat Sajak above the riotous clamor in the hall. “I met someone,” he said, and if a smile had a voice, my brother’s words were smiling. “Her name is Misty.”

The first time John brought Misty home to Edmore, I missed it. I’d forced myself to surrender my dread of traversing my building’s hallways and finally began touring the neighborhood on foot. Friends were work-acquired and transient, but I made some coffee dates and plied my comrades with entreaties to report any sudden residential vacancies. I browsed a nearby record store where I picked out Norah Jones and Foo Fighters CD’s; tried on silly hats in a local boutique; even dined alone for the first time in my life, at a slender little French café called Assiette, where I ordered a ham and gruyere galette, which included one word in its name that I at least recognized. I was always careful to return home before dark, but I eventually began to breathe. I didn’t want to run back to Edmore with my tail between my legs; concede defeat; admit I was a baby.
