Chapter Seventeen
As Grace’s pregnancy became more obvious, it pained Elijah to watch her weeding the garden and picking early spring vegetables. He’d be working in the fields after breakfast, and she’d spend an hour or so in the garden. Then Miriam would pull the buggy out, and they’d all ride off.
Elijah had been curious about her jaunts but didn’t want to ask about her at church for fear of starting rumors. Then last Sunday, two brothers mentioned their sisters were working for Grace and canning at a Mennonite church. So she must have expanded her business.
As soon as Grace drove off with Miriam on Tuesday, Elijah went into her garden to weed and harvest vegetables. He set the basket on the front porch, so she’d see it when she came home. Then he went back to his fields.
He gathered Grace’s vegetables and kept the weeds under control the rest of the week. It added extra work hours to his day, so he often worked in his fields until nightfall.
On Saturday, he’d just finished putting the vegetables on the porch and returned to his fields, when Miriam pulled in. Grace climbed out of the buggy and pointed toward the front porch. Shading her eyes, she scanned the nearby yards and fields. Elijah concentrated on his fields.
A few minutes later, Grace headed in his direction. She waved and called, “Elijah, could I talk to you a minute?”
He pulled his team to a stop. “Of course.” He rubbed the back of his hand over his forehead to wipe away the sweat and readjusted his straw hat. “How can I help?”
“Did you see anyone in my garden?”
Elijah shook his head. He’d been in the garden, but he couldn’t see himself. He hoped God would forgive a misleading statement.
“Nobody?” She eyed him with suspicion. “You’ve been working in the fields here ever since I came out this morning, and you’re still here. Don’t you have a good view of my garden?”
The back of his neck prickled, and beads of sweat ran down his back. Dutifully, he glanced in the direction she pointed. “A very good view,” he agreed.
“So you should be able to see if anyone—or anything—goes into my garden.”
“Truth of the matter is, I rarely look in that direction.” Except when you’re there.
Grace pinched her lips together for a moment. “Someone’s weeding my garden and picking my vegetables.”
Elijah laughed. “Wish someone would weed my fields and pick my crops.”
“You really don’t know anything about it?”
He hadn’t said that. If he answered, he’d have to be truthful. “Looks like Levi’s headed out here.” He hoped that would distract her.
She turned to see where he was pointing.
Levi ran toward them. “Ewijah! Can I hewp you?”
“No, Levi,” Grace said. “Elijah doesn’t need help.”
“Actually, I do.”
“You do?” Levi looked as if someone had offered him an ice cream cone.
“If it’s all right with your mamm.”
“Is it?” Levi turned pleading eyes toward Grace.
“I suppose so. If you’re sure?” She glanced up at Elijah with such sweetness he longed to take her in his arms.
