The Adoption Community

By 1990, there were only three Mother and Baby Homes and a handful of small-scale supervised flatlets still in operation. The adoption community began to take its first tentative steps. The first known group was called the ‘Adult Adoptees Association’ (AAA) and they began to hold meetings and discussion groups in Dublin and Cork. I went to a couple of the early ones. They were in Dublin city centre in a room of a small hotel. At the time, I was in a very different place from the adoptees who sat around drinking tea and coffee and sharing their feelings. I was the only male adoptee there and primarily interested in tracing my own natural mother so I went to only a handful of meetings.
