Chapter 18
The other thugs proved as helpful as the first, or even less so in some cases. Overall, it turned out to be pretty much a waste of their time, other than offering a reason to put the paperwork off till another day. That made the wall of it left to deal with that much more intimidating.
Cassie had the van transport them, and accompanied the prisoners over to book them at the precinct.
Given how much CCTV footage there was of the incident, there was little sheâd need to do to ensure convictions. And any reasons they gave would only make them look unstable to the jury.
Thereâd still be Internal Affairs to deal with, of course. But at least she was buffered from them to a degree.
After finishing the booking paperwork, she put the prisoners from her mind. They were no longer of interest, or a problem, and she had plenty of other concerns to occupy her attention. Mainly a morass of seemingly unlinked factors and problems.
Too many problems. Coming from all directions.
She stopped just short of the rear entrance to the precinct, and checked the time. Still relatively early, at least for the city. Foster would probably still be in her office, dealing with todayâs events. She could go and have a look easily enough.
It was a dumb idea, of course. She shouldnât go and confront her while tired and frustrated. Yet her legs refused to listen to reason, carrying her towards the Organised Crime offices. This was a dumb time to do this. Even at the best of times these days, when she could keep her face calm, her mouth rarely seemed inclined to behave these days.
This was something she could act on, though. That was why she was doing it, she knew. As she knew it was a dumb thing to do. The smart move would be to learn more about Foster. Be diplomatic, play the political game. But that was what had landed her in this mess in the first place. Because she wouldnât accept that certain criminals were out of her reach. And the assignment had worn away her tolerance for such games. Now she wanted things to be open and straightforward.
She drew a few looks as she strolled through OC. But on paper, this was where she was officially assigned. She had clearance to be here. She drew at least one scowl, from her former tail. The nod and smile she sent him would only make things worse.
If he had been replaced, it was with someone more competent.
Foster was in her office, alone with her paperwork. Possibly paperwork caused by the taskforce, so she could well be in as bad a mood as Cassie.
Going in the office, Cassie shut the door behind her.
Foster looked up, her frustration evident. Seeing who it was, her face went blank. She sat back and waited.
âCaptain,â said Cassie.
âDetective,â said Foster.
âWe need to fix whatever this problem is?â
âIs there a problem?â asked Foster. She obviously wasnât tired of the games, no matter what her voice said.
