I stayed downstairs. She had to come back down to lock the door after I had left. Maybe she wanted to find me gone by the time she got back. Maybe doing that would have been a favor to her after the night she had had, but I wasnât going to just leave. She had just had her unpassed placenta removed, or extracted, or something from her. I didnât know what I could possibly offer by way of support, but the least I could do was wait to see that she was actually fine. As I waited, I made the mistake of googling what a D&C was; the procedure that Veronica had just had done.
Worst mistake of my life.
The âCâ in D&C stood for âcurettage.â Why did they let women just leave the hospital after they had had that done? They did that thing to her that you did with Thanksgiving turkeys and stuffing but in reverse. I didnât have a uterus and the other shit down there, so I couldnât empathize but fuck. How was she walking around and talking after that? I heard her coming back down the stairs. She had changed. She was in a thin t-shirt and shorts.
âThanks again, for⦠everything,â she said.
âDonât mention it,â I said. She walked up to me and kissed me, on the lips. It wasnât hungry, or needy; it was grateful. âAre you gonna be okay tonight?â
âI wanted to ask... could you... could you stay here tonight?â she asked. Her hand closed around mine. She had just been taken apart and cleaned like a rifle. I didnât want to leave her, and she didnât want me to leave either.
âWhat about Michael?â
âThereâs no more Michael. I would ask you to come upstairs, but the kids are asleep in my bed.â
âYou want me to sleep with you?â
âI get it if you donât want to... I just-â
âIâll stay,â I said. She went back upstairs to grab a blanket and some pillows, even though it was pretty hot, and we likely wouldnât need the blanket. I took my shoes, shirt, and jeans off. She didnât ask me to put anything back on when she came back down and saw me. I didnât realize how much smaller she was than me until we were lying down.
The couch wasnât small, I could stretch out pretty comfortably, and she didnât take up that much space, so we wouldnât wake up sore. She started with her back to me but flipped over, so she was on her front. The size of the couch meant most of her body was draped over mine. Not a bad thing at all.
She fell asleep with her head on my chest.
