The morning sun poured in through the curtains, dragging Brooke from a finally restful sleep. She got up and got dressed, and was surprised when she didn’t see Colby when she left her room. Glancing at the clock, she realized she’d slept for sixteen hours and it was already late morning. She’d needed it and did feel better.

She heard footsteps and talking outside. Panic gripped her for a moment. She wished for her gun. She was going to have to get another one somehow.

She walked to the window and spotted one of Colby’s brothers, Lawson she thought, sitting atop a saddled horse and holding the reins to another.

She opened the front door and stepped outside onto the porch. “What’s going on?” she asked Colby.

Colby turned to her and smiled. “I thought we might take a ride.”

He’d showered and shaved and looked absolutely gorgeous in his jeans and boots. The swelling in his ankle must have gone down for him to put those on. The smell of his leathery aftershave caught on the breeze and tickled her nose. “Is that safe?”

“We won’t go far. I just thought it might be nice to get outside for a while. Maybe work out the kinks in my muscles. What do you say?”

“She’s real gentle,” Lawson assured her about the horse.

“Besides, I’ll be right here with you.” Colby hefted his foot up into the stirrup, a slight grimace the only indication that his ankle was bothering him. He mounted the horse and took the reins then reached his hand out to her. “What do you say? Take a ride with me?”

She wasn’t an experienced rider and would never have been comfortable on her own horse. Knowing he was going to do the steering made a difference. A ride with her arms wrapped around Colby? How could she say no to that?

Lawson got off his horse and walked over to her, obviously intent on helping her up. Still, she hesitated. “I-I’m not sure.”

“It’s okay,” Lawson assured her. “Colby won’t let anything happen to you.”

It was a promise Colby’d made her several times over. So far, despite multiple attempts on her life, he’d kept it. She was safe with him. That certainty gave her the courage to accept his hand and mount the horse with Lawson’s help.

“Now put your arms around my waist,” Colby instructed.

Her face warmed at the idea of holding on to him. She was glad he couldn’t see it and turned her head away so, hopefully, Lawson couldn’t either. She had to stop having such feelings about this man. Despite her attraction to him, she couldn’t let her heart go down that road only to get broken again.

“You ready?” Colby asked, giving her a side glance.

She nodded and tightened her grip around his middle. “I think so.” Her heart was hammering nervously as he nudged the horse into a walk, but she was more centered on the feeling of his muscles as they moved and on the hand he’d gently placed over hers.
