TEN

Crash! The sound came from the first floor. Then a commotion erupted, with shouting and something slamming into a wall.

Brandi’s body shook uncontrollably as she ran out of the room. Just as she descended the stairs, she saw Rhett standing over the man in flannel, the intruder’s arm hiked behind his back.

The man squealed, “Let go. Let go. I didn’t take nothin’.”

After a second look, she realized the guy was more of a kid than an adult—somewhere between sixteen and eighteen.

“I’m Texas Ranger Rhett Kincaid. Identify yourself.”

The kid struggled against his hold. “Brice Patterson, dude. I wasn’t doin’ nothing.”

“Brice, when I let go, don’t try to run away.” Rhett’s tone held authority. “I need to ask you some questions.”

“Okay. Okay.”

Rhett released his grip and stood. “What are you doing here?”

“Nothing.” The teen slung his bangs out of his eyes and then yanked down his shirt that had ridden up.

Brandi stepped over. “Did you see a young woman here?”

Brice frowned and hesitated. “Why are you asking?”

“She’s my sister.” Her heart pounded. Hope soared he might have spotted Sadie.

The kid looked her up and down. “I ain’t seen nobody.”

Rhett took a step forward. “We’re trying to find her. It’s important. She’s in danger.”

Brice glanced around like searching for a way to bolt. Needle tracks dotted his arm. He jerked his sleeves down when he saw Brandi’s gaze. “I didn’t talk to her.”

“But you saw her?” Brandi tried to keep her tone calm, afraid he’d stop talking.

The kid nodded. “There was a chick here.”

“Come on, Brice. Spit out what you know.” Rhett folded his arms. “I have nowhere else to go today.” He glanced at Brandi with a cocked eyebrow.

She caught on. “Me, neither. I have all day.”

Brice shuffled his feet. “I want to go home.”

“Do your parents know you’re shooting up?”

“They don’t care what I do.” He held his hands in the air. “Like I said. I didn’t talk to her. But I saw a girl a couple of days ago with a kid. I hang out here sometimes when I want to be alone, and I saw a car parked behind the barracks.”

“What kind of car?” Rhett asked.

Brandi found it difficult not to take over the conversation, but she had to admit Rhett was probably better at getting answers. If they knew what model of car Sadie was driving, that could be instrumental in locating her sister.

Brice shrugged. “I dunno. A small dark car with faded paint on the hood. Didn’t have no hubcaps.”

“Go on.” Rhett nodded.

“I waited around until I saw who was in the bunk room. I heard that kid cry and then the lady walked by the window.”

Brandi stepped forward. “How old was this kid? Was it a boy or girl?” As soon as the words were out, she wished she could take them back. The scowl on Brice’s face warned her she was an unwanted intrusion.

Rhett must’ve sensed the teen’s hostility and said, “Answer her.”

“I dunno how old the boy was. Maybe one or two. I ain’t good with kids.
