Chapter 16

STILL PONDERING THE previous day’s mystery messages, Leti stood on the observation deck wondering whether Faun would approve of Raisa’s exodus.

Although conflicted, deep down she knew they should not run from the fight against the Administration. Too many people needed the Resistance. Including populations living outside the city.

The morning broadcast retrieved by Franklin served to remind her of that fact. News of the Administration’s upcoming May 20 military exercises—propaganda to mask the attacks on Torgum and Memphis—meant that in two days, thousands more would experience their version of a Transition.

The thought conjured horrific memories and more than a twinge of guilt knowing she would be hiding instead of interceding on behalf of the people in those cities.

But what could one person do when no one else was willing to stand with them?

Such logic made sense to the world she inhabited, but did little to ease her conscience.

She bent over the deck’s steel railing and viewed the vast preparations underway for the relocation to Akko.

Crews loaded crates destined for the supply ships, while a handful of engineers supervised the movement of sensitive equipment needed to construct a new base near the outermost region of their mapped territory.

Michael and Franklin lingered nearby, elbows resting on the rail as they observed the action below.

Franklin pointed to a large container that was giving its handlers some difficulty. “That right there will be essential,” he said. “That’s the boring bot we built and programmed to develop this base. Most of what you see today was drilled and sealed in just two weeks.”

“I don’t understand why Raisa’s doing this,” Michael said. “Why would she go through the trouble of starting over, and doing it without her husband, no less? How can she so easily dismiss him and his mission?”

“It’s not like that,” Franklin said. “You don’t know all that’s she’s been through. All we’ve been through.”

“Everyone’s suffered since the Transition,” Michael said.

Franklin leaned over the rail and called to a crewmember below. “Let me know when you’re ready for the comms equipment. We’re saving R&D for last.”

The man nodded and gave Franklin a thumbs up

“What can you tell us about that?” asked Leti.

Franklin returned his attention to their conversation. “About what?”

“The Transition,” Leti said. “Yesterday in the control room Maura said a lot of people died because of me. What was she talking about?”

“The Engram. The way Maura sees it, all of this—losing Faun, Raisa abandoning the mission, her mother’s death—could have been avoided if you had brought us the Engram before the city shut down.”

“I didn’t know I had it. How could I bring you something I didn’t know existed?”

“I get it. But if we had the data three years ago, we might have stopped the Administrator before he could mobilize such a large force against us.”

And before so many neighbors and friends were executed.

She crumbled inside, crushed by the weight of a responsibility she had not even known she carried. She knew the guilt was not hers to bear. But she felt it just the same.
