TWENTY-SIX

That evening Tina ate her dinner of leftover curried chicken and rice while catching up with her mother on the phone.

“I’m sorry to munch in your ear, Mom. I’d eat later, but I have plans. And I don’t want to let you go. I’m afraid you’ll fly off to Fiji or something if I don’t catch you while I can.”

“Not a problem, sweetheart. I shouldn’t have called at dinnertime. And I don’t have any more trips scheduled for another month.”

“A whole month, huh?” Tina loved the way her mother had reinvented herself once she retired. Tina had worried that her father’s death would rob her mother of her will to live, but over the past five years her mother had finished her long career as a sales engineer and explored areas of life and the world she had never experienced before.

“How about you, honey? What are your plans tonight? A date?”

Tina swallowed a long drink of water. “Nope. Well, a guy will be there—I went on one date with him a few weeks ago, but I’m not interested in him at all. It’s a group thing. With the youth group from church. Just a movie.”

Because of her plans to join Antony and the kids, she had taken another quick shower after she got home from Zack’s farm. She wore her comfy terrycloth gym pants and a T-shirt, meaning to change into nicer clothes later for the movie. At the moment, however, comfort was key.

“Well, I’m glad to hear you’re getting out there, at least. You work too hard.”

Tina laughed. “Gee, I wonder where I learned that. To tell you the truth, I was out most of the day with Edie at one of those pick-your-own-fruit places. So I’m a little sleepy to be going back out. You know how that is.”

“Oh, come on. You sound like an old woman.”

“Honestly, Mom. I’d just as soon get comfy on the couch and watch something less action packed tonight. We’re going to that new Matt Damon thriller.”

“Oh, I like that Matt Damon. He’s a cutie.”

Tina shook her head. Her sixty-year-old mother thought Matt Damon was a cutie.

“Yeah, I suppose so. But I’m not in a Matt Damon mood. I have this funny romance novel I started earlier this week—”

“Okay, what’s going on?”

“Hmm? What are you talking about?” She took her last bite of chicken and stood up to clean her dishes.

“Tina, you’re not a party girl. I get that, and I’m glad. But you’re only thirty-four, and you’re vivacious and fun loving. What’s so wrong with this evening’s plans?”

Tina shrugged. “It’s not a big deal. It’s just that I hate having to be ’on’ for the kids and ’off’ toward Antony.”

“The guy you went out with?”

“Yeah. I only agreed to go tonight because I thought he wasn’t interested in me. But then I found out he has a sliver of hope. Ugh.” She glanced at the clock. “And I have to go get ready, Mom. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be silly. And don’t worry. You’re a good communicator.
