TWELVE

Danielle sat in the back seat of the big white Suburban. Reece’s brother Ben had called in an order at an Italian restaurant, and they had eaten quickly at a picnic table at a park along the way toward their secret destination. Now Lucy napped with the seat leaned back while Danielle listened to the voice mail left by a nurse from Lucy’s doctor’s office. The nurse was returning Danielle’s call. Of course, they would have to play phone tag. But the message didn’t relay any concern for Lucy’s health, and that reassured Danielle.

Reece had explained to her where they were heading, but she was too exhausted, too traumatized, frankly, to comprehend his explanation. She was left with nothing except to completely trust him, and he had already built that trust when it came to their lives. He couldn’t have known that the safe house, with two deputies guarding them, would not be enough. None of them could have known. Danielle’s trust in him didn’t waver because of it. In fact, she trusted him even more because now he knew more, as did she. That whoever was after them would go to great lengths to get to them.

Danielle had given her statement to officers at the scene, and then Reece and Ben had whisked her and Lucy away. Night had fallen, and a big full moon rose in the sky.

If these two men—Special Agent Reece Bradley and Ben, a U.S. Marshal who was accustomed to protecting people—couldn’t keep Danielle and Lucy safe, then she didn’t know who could.

God, I know You sent them. You had to have sent them.

The reasons why God would need to send such men terrified her. Still, at the moment she couldn’t be in safer hands. If she was going to get some rest, this was the time.

Danielle leaned the seat back and allowed herself to sleep. She would need her strength over the next few days—God, please let this just be over, and sooner rather than later—in order to take care of Lucy and be the mother she needed to be to see her precious little girl happy and safe. Who would think that would be so hard?

In fact, it had been hard before this trip to see John had turned their lives into a dangerous game of cloak-and-dagger.

She’d continued to call and check in at the hospital and learned there was no change in John’s health. She wished they could be there in the room with him, but it wasn’t possible now. In order to relax and sleep, Danielle forced her mind to happier times. To swinging with Lucy at the park. She didn’t go so far back with her thoughts that Tom was in them, because somehow, she almost felt like she was betraying her late husband given the feelings she battled every moment in Reece’s presence.
