CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Eddie smiled back and kissed her again. Then he said, “Here we go.” He put his foot through the opening and saw that there was a bottom to it. Like a conventional bridge, there was something to walk on even though there appeared to be nothing physically. It was just that the shimmering extended into the opening. Eddie let his foot rest on the base of the bridge. The sensation was unsettling. It felt as though he were standing on solid ground, but his foot was clearly in the air as though he were in the middle of taking a broad step over an obstacle. He put his weight on his foot and stepped through, being careful to get his whole body into the opening, not letting an elbow or hip pass through the shimmering edge and thus keeping him from making the trip. The base was about two feet wide, and he had no problem balancing on it. He wondered what would happen if he stepped off and assumed that he would just be back in the room with Roxanne. In front of him, he could see the other side of the bridge, an opening in the air identical to the one he had just stepped through, but now he could see that it was not the same room as the one he had stepped out of. It might have been the same physically, but not temporally. In the future he was moving toward, the room was darkened.
He turned to look at Roxanne. From his perspective, she was in the same room with him, only he was standing more than a foot off the ground. If she could see him, he must appear to be suspended in midair. From the look on her face, though, he could tell that she could not see him. Her hand had again been brought up to her mouth, which she probably held agape. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and awe at what she had seen. He waved to her, but she gave no indication of being able to see. He spoke her name, but again she did not react. Better to get this over with and get back to her, Eddie thought and moved ahead.
In seconds, he was over the small arc of the time bridge and stepped through the other side. He supposed in passing through that there was some risk of appearing to materialize out of thin air if there were anyone watching him coming through. Surely, Blackwood had encountered this type of thing in all his time traveling, but he had not mentioned it to Eddie, so he had no idea how Blackwood had handled it. Seeing that the room he was walking into was darkened, he assumed he would not have that problem right now. Gingerly stepping through the opening and onto actual ground, Eddie looked around and could see nothing save the blue white glow of the time bridge behind him. Now it was a bridge to the past.
