In general, the practice of taiji and qigong is safe. I have not heard of any negative effects on people’s health. But it could cause injury if done the wrong way, just like anything else. If you turn your body incorrectly, you could hurt your back or neck. If you bend and raise your body improperly, you could hurt your back. Here are some tips to avoiding injury.
1. BEGINNERS AND OLDER PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID A LOW STANCE
If you are a beginning student or just starting to learn taiji, you have not yet developed leg strength. If you try too hard to do a low stance (see YouTube for many examples of martial artists using this stance), your muscles and joints may be injured. Keep in mind, some of the martial artists started at a very young age and some are professionals. Some of them had a martial arts major in college, and some were on a martial arts team and competed at high levels. They had much more practice than regular people. Their bodies had prepared for this kind of practice for a long time. You should practice taiji in a comfortable stance. After you have studied and practiced for a while, you automatically lower your stance without trying because your qi and leg muscles are stronger. It happens spontaneously and naturally as time goes by. It is not wise to compete with others who have a low stance. Also, from a preventive health point of view, a low stance could possibly cause injuries, which has happened to many martial art practitioners. This is why they do qigong when they are getting older; they are trying to heal their body.
