When I woke, I was beginning to fall out of my makeshift adornments, I was chilly, and I was currently tucked neatly against Ta'alo's front, his whole body curling around mine to offer me warmth as we both rested.
If I was tired, surely he had to be, as well. He'd skipped out on an entire night of sleep to follow my stupid ass.
I stood slowly, easing myself out from beneath his arms. I slinked off to the adjoining room, swapping out the white shift for a more practical set of clothes Zenia gave me. The skirt was much shorter today, and the top was a simple band that ran across my chest, tying in the back. I felt exposed wearing this, but it wasn't to be helped. I didn't have much choice in clothing at the moment, and it was unbearably hot, so much more fabric on my body would have been unbearable.
I wonder if the entire planet is this hot all the time.
But I remembered them talking about a cold season and a rainy season, so realistically, I knew it wasn't.
A heavy sigh escaped me as I padded back into Ta'alo's room, my jar of ointment in hand. He hadn't moved from his position on the mat, and for a moment, I hesitated, hating to wake him, but it would be worse if I didn't let him know I wasn't running away again.
I gently shook his shoulder, stunned when his eyes snapped open and he jerked upright.
"Woah, there, big boy, where's the fire?"
His eyes shot to the hut's doorway, and then back at me. He blinked a couple of times, getting his bearings. "Is something wrong?"
I shook my head, turning red. "I was gonna let you know I needed to sneak off and find a bush, bud. Nothing major." I rubbed the base of my neck, muttering sheepishly. "I didn't want you to think I had run away again."
His chuckle was a relief as he laid back on the mat, closing his eyes again. "You're welcome to take my knife with you when you go for protection." He pointed to the door, where both our packs hung together. "I put it in your pack for safekeeping. Consider it a mating gift."
I stood there speechless as his soft snores filled the room again, satisfied that I would not run off. I shuffled wordlessly to the door, gently pulling the blade from my pouch. The rough blade felt heavy in my hands as I turned it over, admiring the workmanship of such a piece.
It's a great honor to be given such a gift, Ta'alo, I mused, wishing I had the guts to tell him so when he woke later. He smiled in his sleep, his snores ceasing for a moment, and my heart twisted in my chest.
Was I taking advantage of my alien protector?
