Chapter 14: The Four

Mixer had focused solely on leveling up, never taking a break. He was firmly at number three on the leaderboard by the third day. Only LadyAzazare and Deadlock101 were ahead of him and both had guilds at their backs.

Ano wasn’t far behind him, sitting at the seventh spot. Which meant they were generally hunted everywhere they showed up, but the number of players able to hunt them was reduced considerably. The average level was between 1 and 5—Mixer was Level 23, able to absorb multiple shots and kill multiple enemies before he was even close to being in danger. He hadn’t died once, and that made him one of only a few players who could say that about themselves. Mixer, of course, was very motivated not to die.

He sat with Ano and Sacky in their corner, which other players avoided out of respect, and they went through the final instance that hadn’t yet been beaten—Shipyard. Swarming with hordes of average Reapers and various special editions of them, the directive was to conquer a ship in the yard and take it out to sea. They’d already tried twice and aborted both times, barely making it out alive.

Mixer became distracted while they chatted, feeling the crowd outside their little camp somehow shift. They all seemed suddenly uneasy, restless. He looked up and saw why.

Jinx. Wearing simple black overalls and carrying a handgun, the white-haired woman reappeared. the players collectively held their breaths as she walked past them. She looked angry, dedicated, and to Mixer’s surprise, she made her way directly towards him.

“What does she want?” Ano asked.

“Let’s see.” Mixer took a deep breath and stood up.

Jinx stopped a few feet away and smiled. “Nice work with the Ravagers yesterday evening. I saw you take out AgentWhy and his boys.”

“Thanks. We got lucky.”

“No, we were damned good.” Ano laughed.

“A bit of both, if you ask me. Agent never liked the concept of a hanging rear guard, but I always told him to have one player follow at a distance to take out any attackers in case of an assault. If he’d listened to me, you would have dropped like flies.”

“Then it’s good he is not the kind of guy who listens very well, I guess,” Mixer said.

Jinx looked at him and sighed. Glancing behind her, she saw the entire crowd watching the meeting. Everyone had their eyes on her, and she was willing to bet that most of the channels were broadcasting her return. She had the attention of the crowd.

“I have declared a vendetta against any and all Ravagers and their leader, Deadlock101. I want my rifle back,” she said.

“Good luck with that. It was a nasty move he made on you there. He deserves whatever punishment he’s got coming. I think everybody agrees with that,” Mixer said.

“You three have made quite a fuss. The Three. Everyone thinks you’re the next best thing, but you have a big problem—you’re good at strategy but terrible at tactics. You lack operational excellence, opting to just spray bullets at enemies.
