10 a.m. The Rockets meet for morning shootaround at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston. As the team walks through plays, Battier occasionally stops coach Rick Adelman with questions, asking about a rotation here, a potential mismatch there. He does this for his own benefit, of course, but also for his teammates. “NBA players are no different from high schoolers in chemistry class,” Battier says. “They’re afraid to ask questions because they’re afraid they’ll look stupid.”

One might think Battier could come off as a bit of a know-it-all, but he is smart enough to frame questions and suggestions as team issues, not personal ones. “He is a perfect teammate,” says Rockets center Yao Ming. Then, to stress the word, Yao says it again. “Teammate. He could fit in on any team tomorrow.”
