Chapter 17

Kiss Kiss bang bang

The news about my display of valor at the garba grounds had spread like a wild-fire. Topping the boards did not garner me as much admiration as this fist fight did. I realized ‘Balls matter more than brains.’ The reward of my impulsive act was unexpected and welcoming respect in the eyes of my batch mates. I accepted the compliments with the disposition of a gladiator, who had survived a near death experience in coliseum.

With the first class tests round the corner, I convinced the trio to attend tuitions today.

“Dude, we have our tests in ten days, and I don’t even know the syllabus!” I said.

“Guys, I know that GK will protest, but to cheer ourselves up we should rather go and party. An extended Navaratri of sorts,” Sandy said.

“Guys don’t make me the villain! We all know that we should attend the classes today,” I said.

“GK, how about we go to my place and study? Just to satisfy Sand, we can have a drink too,” Armaan suggested.

“I don’t think I can study after drinking,” I voiced my concern.

“Dude, give the festival a farewell it deserves! We’ll have a drink and try to study. Atleast we’ll make a beginning!” Armaan tried to convince me with a dialogue that was more emotionally and less logically driven.

“Dude, what about studies?” My observation seemed anachronous, after my passionate speech against the current state of pedagogy.

“Did you really think we were going to study tonight?!” Sandy laughed as he gave Armaan a high five.

“Chalo, koi baat nahi. Jab jeene ke paanch hi din bache hain, toh kya farak padta hai ki dost jhoote hain ya sachhe hain,” I smiled.

“Wah! Wah!” applauded all three of them.

“Guys, let’s be the bomb squad this year. What say?” Vikram suggested.

“What the fuck is that?” Sandy slurred, as he gulped down his fifth.

“This started five years back. Eleventh standard boys are supposed to plan the Diwali bomb blasts at Edmonds. The group that executes is called the bomb squad,” Vikram explained.

“Inside the school campus?” Armaan inquired.

“Yeah, this bomb squad has to ensure that on the last day of school before Diwali vacation, at any time during the school hours, they light crackers for continuous three minutes,” I explained.

“But why? What’s in it for us?” Sandy asked.

“Even the group that pioneered this tradition wasn’t able to do it for more than two minutes, and eight of them got suspended for two weeks. Since then, every year people try and fail. If we are able to pull it off, we get our names embedded in the Edmond’s history books. But it’s easier said than done,” I explained.

“The
