They toured the museum and the rest of town, then had dinner at the Thai restaurant sheâd mentioned. When they arrived back at the Candle Beach Hotel, the sky was dark, but after the fun theyâd had, he didnât want their date to end.
âWould you like to see the turret at the top of the hotel? We just finished it and the widowâs walk this past week.â He looked over at her hopefully.
She gazed up at the third floor of the hotel. âSure. Iâd love to see it again.â She eyed him pointedly. âLast time I was there, I didnât get to finish seeing it because someone called me down before I could go outside.â
He laughed. âSorry about that. I didnât know if you were a vandal or something. All I knew was that someone was in the hotel and I didnât know who.â He hopped out of the car and came around to her side, opening the door for her.
âThanks.â She flashed him a smile, then took the arm he offered. âIs Amelia in town?â
âShe went to Seattle for the day to pick up some furnishings.â He checked his watch. âI think sheâll be back in a few hours. Why, do you think we need a chaperone?â He paused, hoping she knew he was teasing.
âI donât know, what do you have planned?â She mock-glared at him. âWait, was this all part of the plan? To get me out here alone?â
âNo, no.â He didnât want her to think that. âI honestly thought it would be nice to go up in the turret tonight. Itâs such a clear night.â He stopped and examined her face. She was smiling up at him â she wasnât upset. He breathed a sigh of relief.
âI think youâre right. It is a perfect night to view the stars.â She followed him into the hotel and up the winding staircase to the turret, stopping in front of the windows. âOh, wow.â
âBeautiful, right?â He came behind her and reached forward to open the door to the widowâs walk. They moved outside, standing together at the railing. It was chilly in the night air, but worth it.
The stars shone brightly overhead, and the moon glinted off the ocean, casting silvery strands of light on the tips of the waves. Except for the sound of the surf, the air was quiet.
âI feel like Iâm in some other world,â Maura whispered. âItâs so gorgeous.â
âIt is. We ended up having to replace all of the floorboards up here and install new windows, which was costly, but I think it was well worth it.â He edged closer to her and put a tentative arm around her shoulder. She snuggled into him, and he slid his hand down her arm to rest at her waist. She sighed happily and turned into him until both his hands were on her waist and she was gazing up at his face.
âI had a really nice time with you today.â She rested her hands on his arms.
âMe too.â He brushed some strands of hair away from her face and his eyes met hers.
