You can also cross the line by revealing something personal, like a struggle you're going through or something embarrassing that happened. This serves the same purpose: to act more like friends, and to allow the other person the opportunity to reveal something about himself.

If you are not very confident in your ability to assess where the line is, it's best to approach it gradually and in measured steps. Test the waters and, if the response is good, push even further. If you cross too far and make someone uncomfortable, you've probably only made them slightly uncomfortable, from which you can easily recover.
