Chapter 28
Nora
I stare into the full-length mirror and try to see myself as blind date number four will see me when I meet him for wine tasting in forty-five minutes. Zadie told me that his name is Bob, but Iâve decided to mentally keep track of them by number, especially at the rate of bad dates Iâve had so far.
I suppose itâs not fair to classify the last two as bad; they just werenât good. Number two was a nice enough guy but painfully boring. Zadie wanted me to give him a second chance, but I couldnât endure another evening discussing black holes and deep space. He made it clear that although he makes a living as a tax attorney, his true passions are physics and astronomy.
Date number three had promise until we got to the dessert course. He was attractive, smart, and polite. I thought we had good chemistry, and I was looking forward to a second date until he burst into tears when I ordered the pistachio gelato. Apparently, pistachio is his ex-wifeâs favorite flavor, and merely the mention of it was enough to set him off. He confessed that he wasnât over her, and he shouldnât have let his friend set him up with a matchmaker.
Neither Eva nor Bridget would hear of it when I told them I wasnât going on any more dates. âWhat about three strikes, and youâre out?â I asked Bridget, but she told me that didnât apply to my situation. So here I am, getting dressed up to meet another potential disaster. Instead, I could be reading by the pool or reviewing prospectuses for potential investment opportunities. Or I could be working on my next big idea for a multi-million-dollar company, which might be the best use of time, seeing as Iâve come up with zero new ideas since selling Limestreet Athletics.
If Bob sees what Iâm seeing, heâll see a thirty-nine-year-old woman, who could pass for thirty-three or thirty-four unless he gets within a few centimeters of my face where the faint crowâs feet and laugh lines are visible. Heâll see shiny chestnut hair cascading over my shoulders and intense grey eyes highlighted with too much eyeliner and mascara for an afternoon date.
If heâs like most men, Bob will notice my cleavage before he notices the rest of my outfit or anything else about my body. I stare at the plunging neckline of the pale-yellow sundress and wonder if itâs too much for a first date. Iâve had this dress for years, and itâs one of my favorite things to wear in the summer because of the way it highlights my tan. I bought the dress in Montauk several years ago at one of the local beach shops for thirty-five dollars. On the hanger, thereâs nothing remarkable about it. But the simplicity of it and the way that it fits me perfectly and reveals enough cleavage to be sexy without being slutty, makes it one of the best items in my closet. I
