The Alibi

“I’m not looking forward to this,” Amy said.

“I know,” Heather teased. “You’ve been saying so the whole car ride over.”

“Well, I think we drew the short end of the stick when we decided to split up,” said Amy.

Heather just shook her head. She thought that the plan for the investigators to split up to cover different leads was a smart idea. Ryan knew that he could trust his wife and Amy to talk to Alan’s ex-sister-in-law to see if she would back up his alibi. Heather hoped that she would be more willing to talk to female investigators than the detectives.

Peters was going to canvass Alan’s neighborhood to see if anyone else on the street could verify that he had been home that morning. After all, it could be possible that the woman he said he was with might be willing to lie for him. If there was another witness on the street, it could be useful.

Ryan was going to work on another lead and was going to track down Mr. Fisher’s current clients so that they would be able to talk to them. Roger had only been able to give them names and not ways to contact them. Roger had also been right that Mr. Fisher had not wanted to give any further information about his clients because he thought it would go against the confidentiality he owed them. So, it was up to Ryan to discover who the MacNeils and the Taylors were in relation to the case.

Amy groaned as Heather parked the car.

“It won’t be that bad,” Heather assured her. “And we might get some good answers. Talking to her might prove that Alan Grift is the guilty party.”

“He does seem like an entitled creep, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him locked up,” said Amy. “But I just don’t know how we’re going to go up to a woman and ask her about sleeping with her sister’s husband. There is no way to do it that is not awkward.”

“Then, it will be awkward,” Heather said with a shrug. “But afterward, we can get donuts.”

“Promise?”

“Of course.”

Amy was persuaded and nodded. They walked up to the address that Alan had given them. After they rang the doorbell, they were greeted by a woman who looked like she had a permanent frown on her face.

“Hello?”

“Are you Suzie Stern?” asked Heather.

“That’s right,” she said, leaning on the doorframe.

“And your sister is Valerie?” Amy asked.

“Yeah. Who are you?”

“I’m Heather Shepherd, and this is Amy Givens. We’re private investigators, assisting the police on an investigation. We were told you might be able to verify an alibi.”

“I don’t know,” Suzie said, looking back towards her house and if she wanted to go further inside. “I’m not sure I want to get involved with a police investigation.”

“Were you sleeping with your sister’s husband?” Amy asked outright.

This captured Suzie’s attention. “I don’t see what that could have to do with a case.”

“We’re looking into Alan Grift’s whereabouts,” Heather explained.

Suzie sighed. “This is going to be so awkward.
