Decluttering your mind
Two of the problems people running their own business experience are:
• An inability to switch off.
• A feeling that their mind is full to bursting point.
This was certainly the case with Charles, the director of a small business, who was shouldering a lot of the responsibility for running the business. I shared with him the strategies I used to declutter my mind when I set up a social enterprise at the same time as studying for an MSc:
• Organise virtually – make use of virtual media to offload stuff rather than hold on to it.
• Only check your e mails two or three times a day.
• Recognise that there are times when it makes sense to just say “No” to invitations and opportunities – diarise the rest.
• Make a note of the things you need to do – don’t try to hold information in your head.
• Don’t spend time talking about all that you need to do – just do it!
• Know when to switch off the TV or put down the newspaper or magazine, as these can contribute to information overload.
• Do something different – take yourself out of your comfort zone.
• Get outside and exercise every day.
• Get a decent night’s sleep by turning off anything with a screen a couple of hours before you go to bed.
Working smarter, not harder
There is no doubt about it: people who run their own business work hard. But the vast majority of the people I work with do not have to work so hard. Their success is not going to come from working harder, but from working smarter:
• Balancing work, rest and play.
• Learning how to slow down.
• Doing more prioritising, delegating and enjoying.
• Doing less managing, parenting and stressing.
• Practicing the 4Ds – Delete, Do, Delegate and Defer.
• Embracing the idea of being good enough.
• Banishing guilt.
• Being mindful.
Managing how you use your time can result in improved efficiency and effectiveness and, at the same time, reduce your stress levels. But you need to personalise your approach, because the focus of time management is to change the way you manage yourself.
