Chapter 16

Damien

As I walk into the airport, my secretary falls into step with me as we make our way to my office, but then she halts me with new information.

“What do you mean he’s out?” I ask as I turn towards her abruptly, making her almost bump into me as she was walking seconds behind me with little space.

“He’s injured and there doesn’t seem to be any other pilot available to take his flight.” She says as she arranges the files in her grip. We may have to think of postponing the flight until further notice.

“What of the passengers? Have they already boarded?” I question, to which she nods, making me groan.

It’s from been one bad news to another today. I’m a bit flustered and worked up about it all. “How did this happen? Where is he now?”

She pushes her glasses up the bridge of her nose. “He’s in the infirmary. The nurses there are attending to him after one of the crews brought him in from the hanger.”

I know where that is and I make my way there as fast as I can. Pushing the doors open, I come face to face with five people in the room.

There is Billy, who should be preparing for a flight but is lying on the bed. There is also his wife I think and then there are the nurses who attended to him. And then HER.

Jacqueline Davis.

“What are you doing here?” I snap even though I don’t mean for it to come out as such. She is the one I slept with one night ago. I’ve been seeing her around, since yesterday but this is the first time we are talking though.

She sighs visibly before she answers. “Good morning Mr. Grant. I’m here because the pilot who’s supposed to be accompanying us on our trip to France is indisposed at the moment.”

I glance from her to the man lying in the bed and the woman who catered to him.

“How is he? Will he be able to fly?” I direct my question to one of the nurses.

She walks around him to put away some equipment. “He is be able to fly.” The equipment she was putting away made a clunking sound as it hit the table.

I smile, as this is at least good news today. “That’s great, isn’t it?” When I glance around, I notice I’m the only one happy about this.

The nurse gives me a stare like I am joking. “I said he can fly, but he won’t be able to fly now,” she clarifies and I feel my smile subside as she continues. “He has a fever. What do you think would happen if you let him fly?”

I sigh as I rub my temples, “You should have made sure you were healthy before you reported for work,” I caution, which his wife seems to agree with.

“That’s what I’ve been saying this entire time, but he doesn’t seem to want to listen. You could have gotten seriously hurt. What then?” She is close to bursting into tears.
