CHAPTER 10

We made our way to Carnell’s portal before Faith activated it by touching her crystal. A sense of dread washed over me, not because I feared for my safety but because I knew that stepping into the council chambers meant risking another confrontation with Lucinda.

As the portal opened before us, I braced myself for the disorienting sensation that always accompanied interdimensional travel. With a deep breath, I stepped through, the familiar rush of energy swirling around me as reality shifted and twisted.

When my feet finally touched solid ground, I stood on the council chamber floor, Lucinda’s and Caton’s disapproving stares looming overhead.

Lucinda stood, running a shaky hand over her overly-slim frame. “It’s about time you stopped by for a report. Have you found the clock?”

I stepped forward, trying to keep Lucinda’s attention off Eve for the moment. “I have a general location. It is in the empowered area that is home to the richer mansions of our culture.”

Lucinda’s face paled slightly. “Do you know which one?”

“No. There are wards all over that area. I found a trail, but it stopped in the forest on the property of an abandoned house.”

“The old Lockney residence?” Caton asked.

I glanced at Faith. “You know it?”

Caton rubbed his chin, appearing to be lost in thought. “Yes. David Lockney died fifteen years ago, but he had no surviving family. His own had perished in a car accident ten years before he passed. The property went into probate and was eventually auctioned off.”

“Do you know who bought it?” I asked.

“An Eastern European businessman, from what I hear. But he never did come to Ravenholde. It’s sat empty all these years.”

“You can tell. The neighbors would complain if it weren’t so far from the road.”

“Marco Madison did complain about the property, but the council allowed him to grow the forest by the road, so it was less unsightly. That was ten years ago.”

“If it’s been abandoned, and the owner is in another county, then someone may be using it as a storage facility. We must check it out, but the trail wasn’t at the house.”

Eve cleared her throat. “We came to the council to see if you had anything to help us break the wards so we can pick up the trail.”

Lucinda sneered at her. “Now you want us to do your work for you.”

Faith growled. “Technically, it’s your job to take care of members of your coven, but I don’t see you out on the streets looking for a cure for Henriette’s illness.”

Lucinda sniffed. “I have duties to the council chambers and the entire coven, especially since Henriette has fallen ill.”

“I bet you do,” Faith said rudely.

Eve touched Faith’s arm as a subtle reminder to back off. “Lucinda, do you have anything to help us break through the wards? We are at a dead end.”

Lucinda shook her head. “That is not my specialty. I am better at creating them than breaking them.”

“Not even the Eternal Lance?” Eve asked in a subdued voice.

Lucinda’s eyes widened momentarily before her lips thinned.
