CHAPTER 24
Wyatt
âHey,â I say, moving closer to her.
âHi,â she replies.
She puts her cell phone in her purse. She doesnât look or sound drunk, but Ruth was at least half right that sheâs out here, so Iâll give her the benefit of the doubt for now.
âAre you ok?â I ask her.
âYes, Iâm great thanks,â she says. She smiles. âThank you for the party.â
âAh, itâs no big deal,â I say shrugging one shoulder.
âIt is to me,â Serena says. She looks at me for a moment and then she closes the gap between us, grabs the lapels of my jacket and pulls my face down to hers and kisses me. Iâm taken aback but the feel of her lips on mine, with their orangey sweetness, her eager little tongue pushing in between my lips, I canât help but respond to her kiss. I wrap my arms around her, pulling her close, and I kiss her deeply. I never want the kiss to end, but thereâs a voice in the back of my mind reminding me that she could be drunk, and I could be taking advantage of her, and that anyone from the office could step out here at any moment and catch us. That voice gets through to me and I force my lips away from Serenaâs and I step back, removing my arms from around her. She lets go of my lapels and frowns at me. She looks hurt and I hate myself for putting that look on her face.
âIâm sorry,â I say.
Itâs lame and itâs not enough but itâs all Iâve got.
âIf youâre sorry for pulling away, then good, so you should be,â she says. âBut if you mean youâre sorry for kissing me, well Iâm not sorry it happened, and truthfully I donât think that you are either.â
I sigh. Iâm not sorry about the kiss. I should be, but Iâm not. I am sorry for pulling away though. I could be kissing her now instead of standing here wishing I was. But I wonât take advantage of her.
âYouâre drunk Serena,â I say. âI donât want to take advantage of you.â
âWhat are you talking about? Iâm not even close to drunk. Iâve had one glass of champagne and one mimosa,â she says.
âBut didnât you come out here to get some air because you were drunk?â I say with a frown.
âWhat? No. I came out because my cell phone rang,â she said. âI knew I wouldnât be able to hear inside.â
âBut Ruth said â¦â I start to say and then I stop. âOh, never mind.â
Ruth got it wrong. Serena is as close to sober as if she hadnât even had a drink and she kissed me because she wanted to. I think of the reasons this shouldnât happen even if we are both sober, but suddenly, they donât seem so important and all I want is Serena. I lean in close to her and whisper in her ear.
âTo,â I say into her right ear and then I kiss her neck.
âBe,â I say into her left ear and then I kiss that side of her neck.
