As industry declined, sports were an element that filled the void in creating a new, familyfriendly image for Stillwater. The St. Croix Collection .

A new Stillwater High School opened in 1960 (523 West Marsh Street). Finally, the newest Stillwater Area High School debuted on a 139-acre site in Oak Park Heights in 1993.

Until the 1960s, Stillwater schools were incongruent with the “normal” schools in the state. Dave Kenney said, in Minnesota in the ‘70s , “Until the mid 1960s, most elementary schools in Minnesota were rural, one-room schoolhouses. In 1971 the state legislature approved a new law requiring all schools to consolidate into districts offering full programming for grades one through twelve.” There were five hundred rural schools in the spring of 1970; the new state law was enforced on July 1, 1971. One example, the Hay Lake School, near Scandia (1895), closed on July 1, 1970.
