CHAPTER XV

The battle was won, but then a tumult arose from the far end of the concourse and it was clear that the war still raged.

"Mother of Christ, Franco!" Big Dog growled, "What'd'ja do, hand out goddam invitations?"

More alphas were coming. Lots more.

There was no point in even considering fighting them off. There were just too many, and everyone involved understood the truth in the old adage about living to fight another day. Big Dog made the call, however reluctantly, and the gate was pulled back to allow them all through. Once it was safely locked behind them, Sarah received a pat on the back from Duke and another from Big Dog, and she had to admit that her mind was in a turmoil that had nothing to do with the swarm. As someone who regularly saw things in black and white, it was disconcerting to suddenly be faced with a world of grey. These soldiers had just saved lives. But they weren't really soldiers at all, were they? But then again, what makes a man a soldier? Boot camp? Swearing an oath? Comradeship? Maybe in this new world, everyone who lent a hand was a soldier. But that damned colonel with his three commandments and his little underaged concubine covered in bruises.….. If he was in charge, what did that say of the men under his phoney command? But then, what did bruises prove, especially in this merciless world? Maybe she really was a willing participant. She was just a kid, sure, but now that the world was back in the dark ages, did the morals of an extinct society have any relevance? Jesus! Sometimes the math of this new fucked-up world simply defied logic.

Big Dog howled a furious "Mother Fuck!" and slammed a meathook of a fist against the gate, then he turned to Franco and growled, "Fuck, Franco! The retards are back running the asylum, and we are officially back to square one! God damn it, man!"

"It wasn't me, Dog, I swear!" The man was a head taller than Big Dog, but he still seemed to cower beneath him, "It was that fuckin' lawyer….whatsisname….. uh, Gianelli! Yah, that's it! I'll bet you anything he was trying something stupid. You know he was a flaky fuck to begin with. He was always keeping to himself….no friends or family. Anyway, all of a sudden I hear screaming, and the next thing I know, they're all racing back to me and John Boy with a pack of mongrels on their tail!"

Big Dog's face turned red, but before he could say a word, Sarah broke in.

"Wait a minute…..You sent the civilians in alone while you big brave men with guns hung back where it was safe?"

"S.O.P," Big Dog spoke through the side of his mouth so he could keep the other man pinned to the spot, "Standard Operating Procedure."

Suddenly, the grey began to blacken again, and even as the first wave of alphas crashed into the gate, Sarah turned her attention to where Lambert was watching over the civilians.
