Ethan parked his Jaguar in front of the entrance to Ten Oaks Kennel. It had rained earlier and he was damned if he was going to drive his car up the hill and park it in a mud pile next to a mud puddle. He knew Meg was busy with the new business generated by the expansion, but she really needed to get the parking lot paved. He avoided the puddles gingerly and walked in. The dogs began to bark furiously as soon as they heard his footsteps.

“Hello,” he called. “Meg? Sammy? Hello?”

And she really needed to hire some extra help. He walked around the counter and toward a muffled voice coming from Meg’s office. He heard her say, “Of course I’m worried! What do you think will happen if I can’t deliver? It will be the disaster of the century.”

Ethan stopped in his tracks when Meg paused. When she started talking again, he crept forward.

“That’s no help, dimwit,” she barked. “You promised you could make this happen and if you don’t, I’m coming after you hard. This is my reputation we’re talking about, buster.”

Ethan heard Meg slam the phone down and before he could slink away, Meg stomped out of her office and nearly ran into him.

“Geez, you scared me!” She hurled her words at him like an accusation. “What are you doing out here sneaking around?” She narrowed her eyes at him, which made him shrink back. “You’re checking up on me, aren’t you? Spring and Autumn couldn’t get anything out of me so now you’ve come for a progress report. Everything’s fine, so you don’t have to worry, and you can stop acting like Nancy Drew. You’re terrible at it, by the way.”

“It didn’t sound okay to me,” Ethan said quietly, and there was a long pause before Meg said anything.

“What? That?” she pointed behind her. “That conversation just now that you were eavesdropping on? That had nothing to do with Bryan. Not. One. Iota.”

“Meg,” Ethan said slowly, as if speaking to a child. “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, you know. None of us really thought you could pull it off anyway. It’s time to come clean and let Autumn know. There’s still time to make this right for Heather.”

Meg took a step toward him and spoke under her breath, mimicking his tone. “Are you out of your mind? Embarrassed? No one thought I could pull it off? Make it right?”

“Now, Meg, just calm down.”

“Don’t you dare come into my place of business, Ethan Rasmussen, and tell me to calm down. I have given you my word that I will have Bryan here in time for your wedding, and I will. I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

Ethan shrugged his shoulders. “I just want you to tell us the truth, Meg. That’s all.” He turned to leave, then paused. “You know I’m going to have to tell Autumn about this.”

“Don’t you dare,” Meg warned Ethan. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. That conversation was about my expansion further into Canada.
