The 1895 Santa Cruz High football team was the most heralded gridiron squad of its era. Articles about the team were published in San Francisco newspapers. An account of a win by Santa Cruz over Union High School of Centerville notes that separate trolley cars took people wearing red and yellow, representing the school colors of both teams. In late October, Santa Cruz hosted the freshman team at Stanford University, losing in the second half 4-0. The crowd, according to one account, “made all the noise possible with throats, cowbells and horns.” Players included Will Burns, Frank Armstrong, James Olive, Clarence Peck, Clyde Hawthorne, Professor Wilson (coach), Sam Faneuf, Floyd Uhden, Ralph Bias, Ralph Bachelder, James Woods, B. Stewart, and W. Barnes. (Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History.)
