I EXITED THE SCHOOL’S back entrance and headed toward the bleachers, surprised at the carnival atmosphere that sprang up on campus in the last twenty minutes.

Tents lined the grass buffer along the road between the perimeter fence and the playing field. Open-air vendors coopted by the school sold football merchandise of every kind. The booster club’s tent was twice as big as any other, with Horseman pride evident in the billowing banners at either entrance.

Face painters and balloons artists surrounded the stairs and decking leading into the stands, while refreshment lines curled around toward the back entrance to the school where the snack shack and other food stalls sold everything from ice cream to funnel cakes and cotton candy to premade sandwiches.

Kick off was in less than twenty minutes and the Sleepy Hollow marching band had taken the field in a pregame exhibition. I dug my phone from my back pocket and scrolled through my texts looking for anything from Rowen.

I’m 10 rows up behind home bench.

Grab popcorn

I texted back knowing she probably wondered where the hell I’d been

KK. Grabbing popcorn now.

What took u so long?

Don’t ask. Any sign of G?

No. It’s a zoo here.

B there soon.

I bought two bags of popcorn and two bottles of water and worked my way through the crowd. Angel was standing by the fence unloading merchandise when he caught my eye, blowing me a kiss.

How the hell did I get so lucky?

“Over here!” Rowen whistled and I looked up, catching her wave from above.

Finding the narrow metal stairs, I climbed over people sitting in the middle of the bleacher steps, trying not to step on fingers or toes.

“God, why do people do that? It’s not like there aren’t enough seats.”

Rowen took a bag of popcorn and a bottle of water from me and patted the cold corrugated bench. “Pop a squat. They’re about to do the coin toss.”

I grinned, taking my seat. “For someone who isn’t into football, you certainly seem excited.”

She shrugged. “The last time I came to a football game my entire crew of friends was intact. Happy, alive, and looking forward to living their lives. It’s taken a while, but I’ve learned to enjoy whatever happiness God grants, no matter how small.”

“Even when it comes wrapped in pigskin?”

She laughed. “Even that.”

Sleepy Hollow won the toss and Hunter turned, giving us thumbs up. The Horsemen took the field. Like Rowen, I didn’t understand much about downs or points or anything. It was hard enough trying to remember the rules for soccer and now that Angel and I were together-together, as Gianna put it, it was probably a good idea to learn.

The whistle blew at the start of a new play and the crowd chanted rounds of Take Their Heads and Let’s Go Horsemen, until someone from the opposing team tossed a giant blow-up banana into our section.

I froze with a handful of popcorn to my mouth thinking maybe Angel had something to do with it. I stood, searching the lower fence for him.
