Chapter 28
Chevon
âChurch skipper!â Chevon said as Hype sat down at the lunch table.
He laughed. âI donât think God is going to strike me down for skipping church.â
âSo you believe in God now?â Jason said.
Hype shrugged. âSometimes.â
Katelynn approached, and Chevon slid over to make room for her.
âSo did I miss anything?â Hype asked. âHow was cruciferous?â
Chevon rolled her eyes. âCrucifictorious. Cruciferous means cauliflower.â She wasnât sure this was true, but she thought so. Her mother was really into vegetables. âAnd you do realize that Crucifictorious is a pretend band from a television show?â
âOh, I know. Your precious Friday Night Lights. I watched the first few episodes this weekend.â
Chevon got excited. She couldnât get Jason to watch it no matter how much she begged. âAnd isnât it awesome?â
Hype nodded. âI donât know nothing about football, but yeah, the show was awesome. I wish it were about soccer.â
Chevon grimaced. She liked soccer, but that show could only be about football.
âSo anyway, what did I miss?â
Jason shrugged. âWas pretty much the same old.â
âDo you guys ever get the feeling...â Zoe started.
âAre you going to be more specific?â Levi asked. âOr are you asking us if we ever get any feeling ever?â
Everyone laughed.
Zoe kicked Levi under the table, and he cried out in exaggerated pain.
âI was trying to think of how to phrase my question, jerk face. Anyway, do you guys ever get the feeling that thereâs more drama going on at church than we know about?â
Oh yeah. Chevon was sure of it. She sneaked a peek at Katelynn. She didnât really want to talk about church in front of her. Not since her mother had gone back to hating all of them. âHow was your math test, Katelynn?â
âAre you joking?â Hype said, oblivious to her redirect. âDrama? Church is the most boring place on earth.â
Zoe scowled at him. âHow can you say that? I mean it has its boring moments, for sure, but the most excitement youâve had in the last year has been because of church stuff.â
Hype looked thoughtful. âMaybe. But donât forget that I wasnât with you guys when you were out rescuing Levi.â
âAnd whose fault was that?â Jason said.
Hype studied his burger.
âAnyway,â Zoe said, âI donât mean that kind of drama. I mean like adults fighting.â
âI really donât want to talk about old people fighting at church,â Chevon tried.
âYou mean about Fiona?â Levi asked.
âYeah, I thought thatâs all it was, but Gramma was acting weird yesterday. And Rachel wasnât in church. In fact, a bunch of the old ladies were missing. And the Puddys werenât there.â
âHas anyone heard from Mary Sue?â Levi asked.
âWe saw her on Thursday, and she didnât say anything,â Zoe said.
âDid you ask her?â Levi said.
âNow that you mention it,â Jason said, âI donât think they were in church last Sunday either.â
âWe should definitely talk to Mary Sue,â Zoe said thoughtfully. âShe must know more than we do.â
âWhy do you think that?â Chevon finally gave in.
âI donât know. Because she pays more attention? Because her parents are so involved? I just have a feeling sheâll know.
