Chapter 28

Chevon

“Church skipper!” Chevon said as Hype sat down at the lunch table.

He laughed. “I don’t think God is going to strike me down for skipping church.”

“So you believe in God now?” Jason said.

Hype shrugged. “Sometimes.”

Katelynn approached, and Chevon slid over to make room for her.

“So did I miss anything?” Hype asked. “How was cruciferous?”

Chevon rolled her eyes. “Crucifictorious. Cruciferous means cauliflower.” She wasn’t sure this was true, but she thought so. Her mother was really into vegetables. “And you do realize that Crucifictorious is a pretend band from a television show?”

“Oh, I know. Your precious Friday Night Lights. I watched the first few episodes this weekend.”

Chevon got excited. She couldn’t get Jason to watch it no matter how much she begged. “And isn’t it awesome?”

Hype nodded. “I don’t know nothing about football, but yeah, the show was awesome. I wish it were about soccer.”

Chevon grimaced. She liked soccer, but that show could only be about football.

“So anyway, what did I miss?”

Jason shrugged. “Was pretty much the same old.”

“Do you guys ever get the feeling...” Zoe started.

“Are you going to be more specific?” Levi asked. “Or are you asking us if we ever get any feeling ever?”

Everyone laughed.

Zoe kicked Levi under the table, and he cried out in exaggerated pain.

“I was trying to think of how to phrase my question, jerk face. Anyway, do you guys ever get the feeling that there’s more drama going on at church than we know about?”

Oh yeah. Chevon was sure of it. She sneaked a peek at Katelynn. She didn’t really want to talk about church in front of her. Not since her mother had gone back to hating all of them. “How was your math test, Katelynn?”

“Are you joking?” Hype said, oblivious to her redirect. “Drama? Church is the most boring place on earth.”

Zoe scowled at him. “How can you say that? I mean it has its boring moments, for sure, but the most excitement you’ve had in the last year has been because of church stuff.”

Hype looked thoughtful. “Maybe. But don’t forget that I wasn’t with you guys when you were out rescuing Levi.”

“And whose fault was that?” Jason said.

Hype studied his burger.

“Anyway,” Zoe said, “I don’t mean that kind of drama. I mean like adults fighting.”

“I really don’t want to talk about old people fighting at church,” Chevon tried.

“You mean about Fiona?” Levi asked.

“Yeah, I thought that’s all it was, but Gramma was acting weird yesterday. And Rachel wasn’t in church. In fact, a bunch of the old ladies were missing. And the Puddys weren’t there.”

“Has anyone heard from Mary Sue?” Levi asked.

“We saw her on Thursday, and she didn’t say anything,” Zoe said.

“Did you ask her?” Levi said.

“Now that you mention it,” Jason said, “I don’t think they were in church last Sunday either.”

“We should definitely talk to Mary Sue,” Zoe said thoughtfully. “She must know more than we do.”

“Why do you think that?” Chevon finally gave in.

“I don’t know. Because she pays more attention? Because her parents are so involved? I just have a feeling she’ll know.
