At Sourton Down on 25 April 1643 Sir Ralph Hopton, together with his Cornish army, marched toward Okehampton as the Parliamentarians fled from Launceston. Hopton hoped to strike a decisive blow, but Major General Chudleigh led a small force of cavalry and ambushed the Royalists at Sourton Down near the edge of Dartmoor. A charge against the advance guard of Royalist dragoons was led by Captain Drake and the men panicked and fell back before running into the troops behind.
The Parliamentarians continued their attack and routed half the Royalist army. Lord Mohun and Sir Bevil Grenville tried to defend the artillery while Hopton relayed orders to Sir Nicholas Slanning to bring up the rearguard. The Parliamentarian attack was finally forced back which led to the Royalists taking up defensive positions amongst the ancient earthworks on Dartmoor. Chudleigh, together with 1,000 foot soldiers from Okehampton, continued to attack the Royalists and fighting carried on into the night. The Royalists eventually withdrew leaving behind weapons, gunpowder and other stores. The Parliamentarians managed to capture Sir Ralph Hoptonâs portmanteau, containing communications from the king commanding the Cornish army to join forces with the Marquis of Hertford and Prince Maurice in Somerset.
