SOUPER HEALTHY WEIGHT-LOSS SOLUTIONS!
Not all soups are created equal. Choosing the right type of soup is important for weight loss. The healthiest and most slimming soups are vegetable soups that use a basic broth/stock and a lean protein source (lean meat, fish, or beans/legumes).
Research suggests that pureed vegetable soup and chunky-pureed vegetable soup are particularly effective in satiating the appetite and therefore useful in the context of a weight-loss program.16 In fact, dietary guidelines put out by the US Department of Health and Human Services in 2010 reported that individuals who consume broth-based soups may have a better chance at controlling their weight.17
Because of how soup increases satiety (that feeling of fullness at the end of a meal), it makes an excellent main dish. Try the following experiment: on two nights a week swap out a normal high-calorie meal for a main dish of soup, and then record how many pounds you lose. For even better results, supplement the soup with a salad instead of bread. Try this for one to three weeks, and the results will speak for themselves! The more weeks you do this, the better the results, and you should be celebrating your good results.
Also experiment with how soup can be substituted for some of your normal meals. For example, instead of beef chili, eat a broth-based bean soup with vegetables. Instead of a large plate of pasta with tomato sauce, eat tomato or minestrone soup. Instead of eating the usual snack food between meals, have some soup. Instead of sipping a warm beverage such as hot chocolate or coffee, sip a mug of warm soup or broth. When you go out to dinner, order a cup of miso soup instead of a drink. I love sipping on a cup of miso soup while I wait for my favorite sushi.
Additionally try experimenting with various soups based on your different needs. If you are trying to lower your blood pressure or reduce hypertension, research shows that gazpacho soup is particularly effective.18 If you are suffering from a cold and want to reduce congestion, research shows that chicken soup is one of the best options.19
