PATRICIA WOULD LOOK beautiful in anything: a bathrobe, sweatpants, or a here-is-baby t-shirt. So the array of tops she displayed for him was simply so much framing for the girl underneath. Her self-esteem was low. He’d noticed that already and knew it was as much part of her pregnancy as the circumstances that had led up to it.

She was also guarded. She’d been upset about something at the restaurant and now sought to hide it, which was her right. Despite all that had transpired between them, they really didn’t know each other. Why then did this new distance bother him? Was he stupid enough, male enough, to actually like her being dependent?

Wrong. She should be able to stand on her own two feet. He’d promised no more than a helping hand and protection from whoever had killed Ray and trashed her apartment. But for how long? He couldn’t in good conscience let her return home, which meant she lived with him, or he found her another place to stay.

“Dr. Bottari isn’t listening to me,” she said.

Marco shook off his thoughts and focused on the blouse. Unfortunately, it was too tight in the chest already. Medical knowledge said that would only get worse as her pregnancy progressed.

He coughed. “Well, it’s ... I mean, your ...” He settled for a nod toward her breasts.

She looked down. “Too small, huh?”

Relieved, he nodded. “Why are we doing this anyhow?” he asked. “I’m glad to buy you some things, but ...”

“Oh, I wouldn’t think of asking you. I just wanted to look.”

His elbows propped on his knees, he stared at her. “So this is for what, fun?”

Her laughter was a marvelous thing. It wreathed its way around him, taking hold of his brain and reformed on his face in a grin.

“Girls love to try on clothes, and I may be fat ...”

“Pregnant,” he said.

“Fat,” she reiterated. “But I’m still a girl, and I find the ugly things they expect us to wear fascinating. Like look at this ...” She pulled a particularly gruesome top from the rack. “Why would any women in her right mind put that on? By the end, I’ll look like a pumpkin. Just carve me up and stick in a candle.”

He didn’t speak, and she looked away, returning the ugly blouse to the rack. “I guess it bores you though. You probably had your day planned out, and here, I am ...”

“Patricia ...” he reached for her. Taking her hand he pulled her close. Her expanded waistline sat at eye level. He laid a hand on it, a gentle caress. “Stop beating yourself up for what wasn’t in your control.” He raised his gaze. “Or mine.”

Her hand on the back of his head shot down to his toes. Her eyes were moist. “I’m a fool,” she whispered. “A frightened, stupid girl who didn’t know what to do until ... I shouldn’t say any of this.” She clamped her mouth shut.

His other hand joined the first and he circled her belly with his fingers.
